Amos Chapter 9
For eight weeks in our study of Amos, we have studied about God warning the nation of Israel of upcoming judgment as they disregarded warning after warning from the prophet Amos. In this final chapter of Amos, it contains prophecy of the coming judgment and dispersion of Israel in verses 1-10; the restoration of the kingdom in the Millennium in verses 11-12; and the blessings of the Millennium in verses 13- 15.

Introduction: For eight weeks in our study of Amos, we have studied about God warning the nation of Israel of upcoming judgment as they disregarded warning after warning from the prophet Amos. I. Amos Directed to Smite the Lintel of the Door
Amo 9:1 I saw the Lord standing upon the altar: and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.
In this final vision of the Book of Amos, the prophet saw the Lord standing upon an altar. That altar likely was that of the idolatrous calf at Bethel. The scene is that of derision and anger by Jehovah God over the idolatry of Israel.
In clear contempt of the idolatrous altar, God stood upon it. He then directed (perhaps to an angel of judgment) to smite the lintel (the top cross member) of the gate into that temple.
We understand this to be the destruction of the temple at Bethel. The mention to cutting them in the head may refer to a specific location on the door posts. Or, it may refer to the priest of that idolatrous temple. I am not sure of which if either.
I am sure that the priests and worshipers at that pagan temple would be slain— every last one of them. The greater scene described in this vision undoubtedly refers to the judgment coming against the northern kingdom and its idolatrous worship when Assyrian invaded and destroyed Israel.
